Wolves’ top target Diego Costa was denied a work permit after arriving for medical evaluation and trial in the English club.
Wolves were prepared to offer Costa a one-year contract as emergency cover after new signing Sasa Kalajdzic suffered an ACL injury, but the former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid striker hasn’t received a work permit because he hasn’t played club football since December.
Although Costa has filed an appeal to try and obtain a work permit, it is believed that Wolves have been offered a number of strikers as potential backups in case the transfer for the 33-year-old fails completely.
Free agent striker Andy Carroll is one of the players Wolves may consider. After only six months at West Brom, where he scored three goals in 15 Championship appearances, the 33-year-old was released this summer, and he has not yet found a new club.
Carroll is one of a long list of players on an emergency shortlist that is only comprised of free agents currently on the market because the transfer window has already closed.
Wolves has scored just three goals in six Premier League games, the lowest total in the league, and their 38 goals scored last season were the fewest of any team outside of the bottom three.
