According to a report, West Ham United has inquired about Everton defender Mason Holgate as they look for a replacement for Nayef Aguerd.
Aguerd joined West Ham as the club’s first acquisition of the summer, but he required surgery for an ankle problem. It’s likely that he won’t return for a while, possibly even into 2023.
In light of this, David Moyes might want to add another defender to the backline.
Aside from the fact that Moyes wants a versatile defender who can play in both a back four and a back three, not much else is said.
Throughout his career, Holgate has alternated between playing centre-back and right-back. He, therefore, fits the type of profile Moyes is looking for.
However, Everton still has him under contract through 2025. It’s unclear how much cash might persuade them to make a sale this summer.
Richarlison’s transfer to Tottenham allowed the Toffees to raise money, but their financial situation is still under scrutiny. After spending slightly more than £1 million to acquire Holgate from Barnsley in 2015, they may be able to turn a profit on him.
In addition, Everton already acquired James Tarkowski on a free transfer from Burnley this summer to fill his center-back position. Holgate may need to keep his options open as he faces increased competition for his position.
