Naomi Osaka defeated Serena Williams 6-2 6-4 to win the 2018 US Open.
She becomes the first Japanese player ever to win a Grand Slam singles title.
The 20-year-old defeated her idol to win her first ever slam title.
Serena was given a third code violation by umpire Carlos Ramos after calling him a “thief”, leading to the penalty which gave Osaka a 5-3 lead.
Teary Osaka said after the match as she was subjected to jeers by the crowd after the controversy involving the Umpire and Serena
“I am going to differ from your question, I am sorry. I know everyone was cheering for her and I am sorry it has to end like this. I just want to say thank you for watching the match.
“It was always my dream to play Serena in the US Open finals so I am really glad I was able to do that. I am really grateful I could play with you. Thank you!”
Serena Williams also declined to answer questions after the Umpire debacle
“I don’t want to be rude. I don’t want to do questions. Naomi played well. This is her first Grand Slam.
“I know you guys were here rooting but lets make this the best moment we can. Lets give everyone the credit where credit is due.
“Lets not boo anymore. Congratulations Naomi! No more booing! Thank you to my team, you guys are amazing.
