The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has reportedly rejected the ruling made by the National Council Of State on Tuesday, January 22, 2019, declaring N27,000 as the new minimum wage.
This was made known to the News Agency Of Nigeria (NAN) by the NLC General Secretary, Dr Peter Ozo-Eson, in Abuja on Tuesday.
He stated that the council does not have the required power to decide on a different amount of money after a Tripartite Committee had submitted its report which stipulated N30,000.
He said, “It is abysmal of government to be delaying the submission of an Executive Bill to the National Assembly and by wrongfully adopting N27,000 through the council of state.”
Ozo-Eson also noted that the NLC has called for an emergency meeting scheduled for Friday, January 25, 2019, during which the council will deliberate over the deadline which was given to the Federal Government, within which to submit an executive bill to the National Assembly.
The general secretary added that the federal government, through the enforcement of N27,000 as minimum wage, was pushing towards a halt in the economy.
“This is because workers should not be held responsible for any development after its NEC meeting on Friday,” he said.
Punch also reports that the Trade Union Congress Of Nigeria has also rejected the possibility of an increment in the National minimum wage from N18,000 to N27,000.
According to the reports, the TUC which represents senior civil servants, made this know via its spokesman on Tuesday, January 23, 2019.
It emphasizes that agreeing to the minimum wage was meant to be as a result of a negotiation and the agreement had been N30,000, not N27,000.
