Director-General Of WHO Tedros congratulates Okonjo-Iweala

The Chief and Director-General of the World Health Organisation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, sends a congratulatory message to Former Nigerian Minster, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as she’s pre-approved to become the first female Director-General of the World Trade Organisation.

Taking to his official Twitter handle, Tedros on Friday night, tweeted;

“Congratulations to my sister @NOIweala, who will lead @wto with the distinction she has shown throughout a remarkable career. Thank you as well for your ongoing support for @WHO, including as my special envoy to @ACTAccelerator”.

The DG of WHO sends congratulated Iweala following her Tweet, where she thanked the US and her competitor, Yoo Myung-hee, who backed out of the race.

Okonjo tweeted;

“Grateful for the expression of support from the US today for DG @WTO. Congratulations to Madam Yoo of Rep. Korea for a hard-fought campaign.Thank You, President Muhammadu Buhari @MBuhari &all Nigerians, for your unflinching support.Thank you, friends. Love to my family.Glory to God”.

Okonjo’s dream of becoming the DG of the World Trade Organisation was blocked by the former United States of America president, Donald Trump.

Following the swearing-in of the newly elected President, Joe Biden, and the willing withdrawal of Iweala’s competitor, Yoo, the US sends a statement through the office of the US Trade Representative, which reads;

“The United States takes note of today’s decision by the Republic of Korea’s Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee to withdraw her candidacy for Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).”

The statement further reiterates that the Biden-Harris administration gave his support for Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to become the next Director-General of WTO.

“She is widely respected for her effective leadership and has proven experience managing a large international organization with a diverse membership,” the statement affirmed
