Renowned Afrobeats sensation Tiwa Savage is poised to grace the silver screen with her acting debut in the upcoming drama ‘Water & Garri’. Directed by Meji Alabi, the film promises a gripping narrative centred around Aisha, played by Tiwa Savage, a driven fashion designer returning to her homeland after a decade overseas.
Set against the backdrop of Cape Coast, Ghana, ‘Water & Garri’ explores Aisha’s journey of self-discovery and reconciliation as she confronts a changed homeland marked by escalating violence and simmering tensions. The story, described in a press release accompanying the announcement, follows Aisha as she navigates her past, reconnects with family and friends, and confronts the ghosts of her past love.
A few months ago, Tiwa Savage shared her excitement about the film, describing the journey from concept to global launch on Prime Video as a dream come true. She said “This project is a complete labour of love that has been a dream of mine for a number of years. Performing as Aisha allowed me to be totally vulnerable and pushed me to express myself in a way that I have never done before“.
The title ‘Water & Garri’ resonates with Savage’s five-track EP released in 2021, which received critical acclaim and featured collaborations with artists like Nas, Rich King, Amaarae, Brandy, and Tay Iwar.
Savage’s previous full-length album, ‘Celia,’ released in 2020, reached No. 15 on Billboard’s World Albums chart. Her recent collaboration with ODUMODUBLVCK on “100 Million” was featured in Billboard’s Afrobeats Fresh Picks column last month.
Joining Tiwa Savage in this cinematic endeavour are acclaimed actors Mike Afolarin, Andrew Bunting, and Jemima Osunde, promising a compelling ensemble performance. With its thematic depth and evocative storytelling, the film aims to captivate audiences worldwide upon its Prime Video premiere on May 10.
Produced by a team led by the singer herself, including Vannessa Amadi-Ogbonna, Jimi Adesanya, and Meji Alabi, ‘Water & Garri’ represents a collaborative effort to deliver a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant cinematic experience.
