Prior to entering Nigerian politics, Akume worked in the Benue State civil service, eventually rising to the position of Permanent Secretary.
Akume ran for governor on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform after the country’s return to democracy in 1999.
He was elected governor of Benue State in 1999 and served two four-year terms.
He was elected to the Nigerian Senate to represent the people of Benue as a senator for Benue North-West.
